| Mode Of Action | It inhibits intestinal alpha-glucosidases hence delaying the digestion and absorption of starch and sucrose. |
| Drug Indication | Diabetes mellitus inadequately controlled by diet or by diet with oral hypoglycaemic agents. |
| Precautions | Monitor serum hepatic transaminase in patients on 200mg/day for the first six months; may enhance hypoglycaemic effect of insulin and sulphonylureas. Due to its MOA, hypoglycaemic episodes should be treated with oral glucose not sucrose. |
| Contra-Indications | Under 18 years; pregnancy; states that deteriorate due to increased gas formation (e.g. intestinal ulcer and hernia); breastfeeding; severe renal and hepatic impairment; inflammatory bowel disease; intestinal obstruction; colon ulceration; and history of abdominal surgery. |
| Side Effects | Flatulence and bowel sounds; diarrhoea; abdominal distension; abdominal pain (less common); hypersensitivity reactions; jaundice; and hepatitis. |
